Hundreds attend the Eighth Annual Centro Hispano Daniel Torres Breakfast of Thanks and Holiday Sing-A-Long

(Reading) - Centro Hispano Daniel Torres kicked off its 2021 Breakfast of Thanks on Tuesday December 21 to over 300 guests at the wonderfully decorated Kraras Hall. The attendees arrived to holiday music before serving themselves to a filling and delicious breakfast buffet.

Centro Hispano board chair, Brad Hall took the stage to welcome everyone, and share that thanks in part to partnerships with organizations like the United Way of Berks County, the Area Agency on Aging, the County of Berks, and the Berks County Intermediate Unit we have been able to do the following during the pandemic in the past year: provide support and assistance with wrap around services to meet their safety net and health and wellness needs, prepared over 700,000 nutritionally balanced meals for toddlers as young as 3 years of age to senior citizens over 93 years of age to address food insecurity in our community, and as part of our Workforce Development & Social Entrepreneurship Initiative, The Centro Hispano has expanded its Medical Interpreting services to break down the barriers of language access for our most vulnerable needing medical services. Most importantly during the pandemic, Centro Hispano led efforts to secure over 10,000 vaccination shots in the arms of our community.

Mike Toledo then took the stage to thank and recognize the board of directors and staff of Centro Hispano, the sponsors of the breakfast and the attendees of breakfast.

Mr. Toledo then spoke of honor we have of recognizing the true heroes of the past 20 months, the frontline and essential workers that are still at their posts throughout the pandemic. Centro Hispano’s strategic vision changed at the start of the pandemic to focus on ways they could positively assist those most impacted by the pandemic while continuing to focus on the overarching needs of the community. The Centro Hispano never closed during the pandemic and their staff never wavered in their commitment to positively impacting lives in the community.  Through their meal programming they increased the number employees at the Centro Hispano with family sustaining walk to work jobs in the city of Reading.

To add to the festivities of the morning, special performances by the Reading High School Vocal Company, the Spoilers Jazz Band of Muhlenberg High School, and the dulcet crooning and sing-along of vocalist Dave Kline.

2019 Breakfast of Thanks

Daniel Torres Hispanic Center holds annual holiday breakfast

By Karen Shuey  Reading Eagle - December 18, 2019

More than 300 supporters of the Daniel Torres Hispanic Center gathered over breakfast Wednesday at the Crowne Plaza Reading to celebrate the holidays, to say thanks to a community leader for the support provided and to honor a longtime advocate for his many contributions.

Clover Dairy Farms was the guest of honor at the center's Holiday Breakfast of Thanks.

The event also marked the first breakfast without Paul Roedel.

Roedel, the retired chief executive officer of Carpenter Technology who died last month, was remembered at the event as a respected community member and generous philanthropist.

Michael Toledo, president of the center, highlighted the role Roedel played in assisting the center — from seeing it through tough financial times to mentoring its leaders.

The sound of holiday music and smell of breakfast food filled the Wyomissing hotel as more than 300 community members met to eat and socialize. They heard performances from local musical groups as they mingled around the ballroom.

Toledo said the breakfast has grown each year since it began seven years ago. He said the intent is to gather people who are involved with the center’s programs and support the efforts financially and in other ways for a community celebration.
